The Bike Share Task Force in conjunction with the Residence Hall Association has created UNC’s first bicycle share program called Tar Heel Bikes. The bicycle share program provides Kona AfricaBike Three bicycles to be checked out for short-term use by community members for occasional trips on and around campus. In addition to increasing student mobility, bike shares promote sustainability and community on campus.
The mission of Tar Heel Bikes is two-fold: to provide community members access to bicycles, and to promote sustainibilty and cultivate a biking culture on campus.
This program currently consists of 8 total bikes stationed at Morrison and Olde Campus Lower Quad Residence Halls, with 4 at each site. The process for checking out a bike is similar to checking out any other enhancement from the community front office. All you need is our One Card! Daily bicycle checkout is free for residents who return the bikes in good shape and on time.
Tar Heel Bikes is supported by various on and off campus organizations.
- The Bike Share Task Force (BSTF) represents student interest in the bike share on campus.
- Mechanics from the ReCYCLEry are responsible for keeping the bikes running safely and smoothly. The ReCYCLEry will perform rounds twice a month to check air pressure in the tires and the integrity of the brakes and bike chain. Should a bike require extra attention, the staff will move the bike to be worked on at the ReCYCLEry.
- The Department of Housing and Residential Education’s (DHRE) Resident Advisors (RAs) and Office Assistants (OAs) helps residents’ check-in/out bikes.
- The Residence Hall Association (RHA) coordinates the bike share and other personnel such as the Office of Sustainability, the Department of Public Safety, and any other UNC entities affiliated or interested in the program. RHA is also responsible for collecting student charges for damaged and lost bikes.
